Sports Convener | South Winnipeg Community Centre

Sports Convener

A community centre runs on the strength of their community volunteers.  All board positions are volunteers who strive to provide our youth and community the opportunities for a healthy lifestyle including sports.  So what is required to be a sports convener?

  • SWCC monthly meetings
  • Represent SWCC at Sport Association meetings
  • Set fees for upcoming sports season in association with SWCC Board
  • Open and close online registration (note most sports are now registering through their sporting association)
  • Tryouts/Coach Identification/Team formation
  • Equipment Purchases
  • Team gear distribution and return (Team bags, jerseys)
  • Provide board with financial statement

A typical spring season would consist of the following:

January – Identify fee breakdown and adjust registration fees accordingly.  The sporting association will identify any increases/changes which are built into the community center fees.  Summer field sports also has to include the City of Winnipeg Field Administration fee

February – Set up online registration system (enter fee structure and opening and closing dates)

March – Monitor Open and close of online registration, answer parent questions. Prepare team bags, jerseys for distribution.  Purchase required gear/repair/replace broken/missing gear

April – Tryouts.  Most sports run a group or combined tryouts (if required) or ran at an association level.  Coach identification, Team formations, gear handout.  Forward schedules to teams, ensure official are scheduled (most leagues use a central scheduler and official assigner)

May/June – Games played, answer coach/parent questions, possible handle rainout reschedules.  Association payments

End of June/July – Gear return

September/October – Soccer second session.  Gear return.

The Registration fee is to include the community Centre Participation Fee and other expenses identified.

There is no expectation for the convener to play out of pocket.  Expenses should be billed directly to the club.

Registration breakdown is as follow:

Player Registration fee Paid by the parent Fees paid should cover all costs
